I knew walking into this novella that it seems to be pretty polarizing. Now, admittedly, I have very little knowledge or experience of the background and origins of a lot the dangerous entities lurking with these pages – so my reading experience might be a bit different than someone who better understands the history and tropes of this specific kind of horror (and I had to do a lot of googling while reading to try and catch myself up!). Khaw’s horror novella, Nothing But Blackened Teeth, is an unsettling story immersed in Japanese horror. When four friends come together in a haunted mansion to celebrate a wedding, things take a very dark turn when a ohaguro bettari starts surrounding them….but it may be the four humans themselves who are the greatest threat to each other.

Did that line leave you confused? Don't worry. The story is simple enough for beginning readers (despite the atypically shaped letters) and would make a fabulous read aloud book one to one or for groups. The illustrations really make this book, but the accompanying story is informative and interesting too, though very sparse. I rewrite them three times over three days, and then they're done." Told through a series of poems, text messages, and emails, this contemporary YA is perfect for fans of Gaby Dunn and Allison Raskin. “ A heart-wrenching quest for identity every YA reader will relate to, and a deep dive into the meaning of family." -Ellen Hopkins, #1 New York Times bestselling authorĭebut author Dante Medema explores the emotional fallout after a teenage girl discovers she is the product of an affair. The definition of the nation, and its relation to the state, can be pictured as a circle, with “thick” versions of identity on one side and “thin” versions on the other. Instead, it eats liberalism.” Purging American identity of nationalism and refounding it on a purified liberalism is her purpose in this brief but ambitious book, based on essays in Foreign Affairs and The New Yorker. Toward the beginning of “This America: The Case for the Nation,” Jill Lepore, a professor of history at Harvard and a staff writer for The New Yorker, says: “When serious historians abandon the study of the nation, when scholars stop trying to write a common history for a people, nationalism doesn’t die. This illuminating new portrait gives us a very human Lincoln-an imperfect man whose moral antislavery commitment, essential to the story of justice in America, began as he grew up in an antislavery Baptist community who insisted that slavery was a moral evil and who sought, as he put it, to do right as God gave him to see the right. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations.Īt once familiar and elusive, Lincoln tends to be seen as the greatest of American presidents-a remote icon-or as a politician driven more by calculation than by conviction. Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when implacable secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. Pulitzer Prize–winning biographer and #1 New York Times bestselling author Jon Meacham chronicles the life of Abraham Lincoln, charting how - and why - he confronted secession, threats to democracy, and the tragedy of slavery to expand the possibilities of America.Ī president who governed a divided country has much to teach us in a twenty-first-century moment of polarization and political crisis. In my opinion, this would have to be a book you need to pre-read and make judgments on appropriateness based on each child individually. One of the illustration word bubbles that would be drawn to a particularly older audience is the use of to insinuate that they had heard inappropriate language, or a curse word. I found that the book would be inappropriate to most children of a younger age group but still would fall between a reading level of K-2, based on the text content. The illustrations in the book are fun to read because they have word bubbles for what the boys are saying, or possibly thinking. The book's message has a sarcastic tone to it and may be inappropriate for certain ages. Review:This book is great for young boys who enjoy being fun and silly. When it comes to the last night at grandma and grandpa's house the boys finally find themselves outside and enjoying nature. Most of their time is spent playing together inside and acting silly. The boys were so excited to go to nature camp but end up being far from adventurous in the outdoors. The boys stay at one of their grandparent's houses for the week because they live near by.
